’49er’ Royalty

Posted by mhsalumni on April 22, 2012

Gary Anderson sent us these news clippings of the Beautiful Forty Niner Queen and her court, circa 1950.

The following news article makes us want to go back and attend the celebration again, the gold Rush Parade, the soapbox derby, the games at the park, dancing to the Melody Makers and trying your luck in Allens Alley! Where was Allens Alley and trying your luck at what?? It was such a fun time in Milford, they really used to know how to have fun and throw a celebration.

Early Little League-Field action

Posted by alumadf on April 13, 2012

This starts a group of Little League photos from the Brad & Linda (Johnson) Weston Collection. What a treasure trove of  pictures they have provided for us all. Thanks so much to them. This is by no means all there is to the beginnings of the Little League in Milford. You can also view others in the archives at the left column of this blog under April 2009. This photo shows the original field for Little League play, remember it was due east of the UPRR Depot across the tracks. I know you all must be tired of seeing so many of these same pictures posted, but this final posting is, in my opinion, the best for viewing and printing. Remember for enlarging you just have to click on the photo. Hope you all enjoy this site. af

Early Little League-Kim Bird

Posted by alumadf on April 13, 2012

Barry Bird class of 1957 sent this photo of his little brother Kim and ascertained the beginnings of Little League in Milford through conversations with start up coaches Bob Davis & Clyde Turner that 1956 was the first year of organized Little League. Kim, sadly, was killed while serving in Viet Nam and as Barry told me ” I sure do miss that kid”. We who remember share a piece of his loss. More little league shots will follow and somehow I vow to keep them in the post. af

Primary Class

Posted by mhsalumni on April 5, 2012

We found this pictures in our files and it made us smile. I looks like a Primary Class from the early 50′s. Were the kids in the back practicing first aid?? We can pick out most of the faces but not enough to put names to them all, help us out here and tell us if you are in there.

and The Crowd Roared

Posted by alumadf on March 18, 2012

Some can recall the huge rivalry at work here in the old MHS Gym. My question would be, who in either town was not there watching? Will some one give us some names?

Old 49ers Photos

Posted by alumadf on January 17, 2012

Sent to us from Nedra Wunderlich Kennedy, she says they were given to her by Enoch (Nick) Swain of a 49ers celebration. Old timers will recognize some of the Milfordites. Thanks to Nedra for sharing. This celebration is alluded to in the reflections column above, but I see now, the dates were in the early 50s. Click on a photo and you will view this as a slide show, look for directional arrows at left & right of each photo. Check for Pat Wilcock, Lynne Bracken and help us out with the 3rd royal girl (center). See Marvin Horton with the movie starlet (unknown) in the convertible with Robt. S Davis driving and Bob Carter riding Shotgun. In the photo with Hoot Gibson on the left you can see Pat Williams and young steve at far right.

Growing up in Milford, October meant Deer Hunt! It was time to pull out those red sweatshirts or red flannel shirts and pin the hunting licence to your hat. We have had this picture for a while waiting to post it in October. Thanks Brad, how about identifying the camp crew for us.

Send us your old hunting pictures and maybe one of the Big Buck you got!

We have gotten word that the Next MHS  Reunion will be held August 31, September 1 and 2, 2012, Labor Day weekend!  Chairman Tim Fisher and his committee have a great time planned, please mark your calendars now!

Puffer Lake Lodge

Posted by mhsalumni on September 22, 2011

We just could not resist posting this picture of Puffer Lake Lodge, I thought it was a big, big Lodge! What happened? It is another one of Jack Weston’s beautiful pictures. What was the name of the little lake that was in front of the lodge? Brad and Linda had it titled Otter Lake, but I thought it was named Mirror Lake, but I may be totally wrong!  Anyone know?

This last picture was sent by Larry Fitch, he is trying to identify the people in the picture as you can see by what he has written on the picture, can you help him out? Is that the front of the Puffer Lake Lodge?

Fun Pictures, thank you for sharing them with us!

Summer End at the old swimming pool 1953

Posted by mhsalumni on September 5, 2011

How many hours were spent this the old Milford Swimming Pool?! All summer long it was filled with splashing kids, sunbathing girls and a few good divers like Jack Weston in the photo. Brad is standing with his Dad on the side of the pool, note the rubber “nose plug” around his neck. When we were kids it was run by Coach Petty with swim lessons in the morning and free swim all afternoon and evening swim for the serious swimmers. You had to prove to Coach that you could swim across the pool before he would let you cross the rope into the deep end. We loved that pool, our kids would swim there whenever we visited.

Do you recognize any of the swimmers in the picture? What year was the pool built and who managed it before Coach Petty?

Granite Peaks Pond

Posted by mhsalumni on August 16, 2011

Here is another beautiful picture from Brad and Linda Weston, we are truly grateful to them for finding all these wonderful pictures taken by Jack, Brad’s Dad. His talent for photography speaks for itself.

Our family went to this pond to swim only once, but I never forgot the beauty of the place, it was icy cold and of course my brother tried to scare me telling me it was bottomless! We swam to the edge and looked over into the valley below.

We would love to know more about the place, I am sure many of you have been there. Does any one know who put the “wall” on the end? Share your memories of this unusual spot as Linda said, ” The Mineral pond looks beautiful, and again a constant reminder of how lucky to have those mountains so close to Milford”.

Don’t forget to “double click” the picture to enlarge it!

Puffer Lake

Posted by mhsalumni on August 12, 2011

Brad and Linda Weston sent us this beautiful picture of Puffer Lake,  Larry Fitch sent us the pictures of the fishermen at Puffer Lake.

Our family also spent a lot of time fishing in the Beaver Mountains and most of it was at Puffer Lake, we used to rent a little cabin there and a boat and spent many hours on the lake or fishing from the rocks. I remember the Lodge being owned by The Larsen’s, Mrs. Clerinth  Larsen was my favorite teacher, and I loved visiting with her in the Lodge. Later it was owned by Bob and Marge Schramn. We would love to hear from you what you know about Puffer Lake, or hear your fishin’ tales!

Brad’s Dad was a wonderful photographer and we would like to thank Brad and Linda for going throug them and sharing with us! Thank you too, Larry for sharing the great fishing pictures!

I could not resist adding my own picture of myself and my brother, taken in front of one of the cabins in about 1951 or 52. Send us one of yours!

TV BBQ?

Posted by alumadf on July 17, 2011

Another set of photos from Brad and Linda Weston. Notes from them indicate that this was a TV Barbeque event, possibly for the installation of Television reception equipment in the Mineral Mountains. Must have been quite an event as it looks as if they were catered to by Union Pacific cooks. Can anyone help with some details of the outing?   Q: When did TV come to Milford? Click on image to enlarge!
