Old 49ers Photos

Posted by alumadf on January 17, 2012

Sent to us from Nedra Wunderlich Kennedy, she says they were given to her by Enoch (Nick) Swain of a 49ers celebration. Old timers will recognize some of the Milfordites. Thanks to Nedra for sharing. This celebration is alluded to in the reflections column above, but I see now, the dates were in the early 50s. Click on a photo and you will view this as a slide show, look for directional arrows at left & right of each photo. Check for Pat Wilcock, Lynne Bracken and help us out with the 3rd royal girl (center). See Marvin Horton with the movie starlet (unknown) in the convertible with Robt. S Davis driving and Bob Carter riding Shotgun. In the photo with Hoot Gibson on the left you can see Pat Williams and young steve at far right.

The Hollywood starlet who came with Hoot Gibson to the 449ers name was Devy Davenport. Probabally riding in Dave Morris’ car.

These photos brought back memories I’d forgotten. In those days, 49er’s Day royalty was chosen by people putting coins in a jar with the candidate’s picture on it placed in various stores in town (fortunately for me, not a beauty contest, with swim suit competition, etc.). The candidate bringing in the most money was chosen queen, with the runners-up as attendants. Norma Reese (center) was queen, with Angie Waddoups and me as attendants I think I was 15 or 16 at the time. I remember the trip to Frisco and Newhouse with Hoot Gibson and Sophie Tucker and the others . Hoot Gibson and Sophie were both such jolly people, and I was struck by Devvy Davenport’s beauty. Another woman was in their party, too, but I don’t remember her name. (Wish I’d kept a journal or scrapbook.) At the time, I wished that I had a western outfit like the other gals, but that’s life. All in all, it was a fun experience for a teenager. In subsequent years, when reading quotable quotes from Sophie Tucker, I remembered that I’d had the opportunity to meet her in a unique setting. One of those quotes is: “From birth to age eighteen, a girl needs good parents. From eighteen to thirty-five she needs good looks. From thirty-five to fifty-five, she needs a good personality. From fifty-five on, she needs good cash.” HOW TRUE! It was also fun to see Bob Carter in one of the pictures–I loved babysitting for him and Irene. Thanks for the memories!

I am so glad that I was able to share these photos. Nick Swain was very worried about putting names to faces. He asked me to talk to Bob Carter to get the information but before I could do that Bob passed away. I will be giving these photos to Cheryl Elmer and Arden to include in the history files they are putting together.
